The expression is social media is a waste of time, and this is an utterance that is used daily both in informal and productivity circles. It is a sentence that is weighty, doubtful and even accurate depending on who states it and what circumstances it is said under. But is it correct in to omnipotence? Is it an over-generalization, sub-suming important details?

Our everyday tasks and even identities are controlled by social media such as Instagram, X (previously Twitter), TikTok, and Facebook and they do so in such an everyday way that it is hard to imagine our lives without them. We use them to stay in touch, to speak, to share, to sell, to learn and yes…to mindlessly scroll.

But the interesting question, is not whether social media is useful or not- but whether the assertion that social media is a waste of time can pass the test of scrutiny. As we shall see in this article, this is a myth as well as a truth. What gives social media value? Where is the line between productive and setting out and being unproductive? And can a means be found to stop the balance?

The Myth: Social Media Has No Real Value

Among the most popular arguments used by critics is that social media is senseless fun containing superficial information that does not add anything positive to individuals. They claim that it leads to distractions, comparison, fake life, fake identity and essentially adds nothing to our lives.

When thinking this way, scrolling through an influencer going through their morning routine, a 20-second dance challenge, or a meme thread represents very few facets of learning or practical use. This argument extends further to say that social media encourages laxity and escapism-a digital comfort zone that people get into as an avoidance of reality, duties or a lack of introspection.

There is actually some truth here. After long heavy use, reported symptoms by many users include feeling worse, emotionally drained, anxious, and as though they have accomplished nothing. There are even researches that indicate the overuse of social media causes a shorter attention span as well as a lack or low level of self-worth.

Therefore where people conclude using these observations, they will be correct to think that social media is a waste of time.

The Reality: It Depends on How You Use It

  • Self-Expression and Identity: 

To many, social media is like a lifeline where they can express themselves, share and gain new experiences with individuals who are like-minded. Marginalized communities may find representation and solidarity in it that are not easy to find elsewhere.

  • Activism and Awareness: 

The social media has been used to develop global movements. Hashtags have sparked revolutions, brought millions of dollars in donations and helped create awareness about such important issues.

It is in this respect that the phrase social media is a waste of time becomes very relative. It does not matter which platform you use; the purpose matters..

The Time Sink Problem: Where Things Go Wrong

Although there are ways in which social media could provide positive outcomes, it is also true that such media are meant to be sticky.   • Do I log off feeling better or worse?

If your answers trend negative, it may be time to acknowledge that social media is a waste of time—at least for the way it’s being used.

Finding the Middle Ground: Conscious Consumption

We don’t need to abandon social media altogether. What we need is conscious consumption.

Set Boundaries

Use screen time limits. Schedule social media windows. Avoid logging in during work hours or right before bed.

Curate Your Feed

Follow people who inspire, educate, or make you think. Unfollow or mute accounts that bring negativity, comparison, or meaningless noise.

Post With Purpose

Before posting, ask why. Is it to connect? Share value? Express something real? That intention can shift your entire relationship with the platform.

Reflect Regularly

Every now and then, ask yourself: “Is my time here adding or subtracting from my life?” Adjust accordingly.

Final Thoughts

It is true that it is a waste of time to use social media? There is no black and white answer to the question. It can definitely be this way in some people–when smoked unconsciously; when smoked to excess, or as an escape. To some, it is a place of inspiration, connection, knowledge and even livelihood.

The trick is consciousness:
